The Uroborous, not pictured here, is an ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail and represents the cyclic and devouring nature of human life which is so often carnivorous in its appetite for violence.
Spring speaks of rebirth, hope and fertility the hedgerows are ablaze with life and butterflies are waking.
This spring feels as if there is also a famine of hope and life is blighted not by winter but by war, pestilence and human hubris, one of the worst, if not the very worst sin of our Fallen nature.
I have a picture of a glorious hedgerow which I will have to post separately but yesterday I received this picture of a solitary raven who has moved into my friend’s street in Mile End and which he sent me last night. His ominous presence reminds me of the critical state the universe now suspends in. Shakespeare always dreaded the solitary raven, a critic of human nature.
The croaking raven doth bellow for revenge. — William Shakespeare, Hamlet (1600-02),
